General Anesthesia

As much as we wish it wasn’t the case, we realize that some people feel terribly anxious or fearful about visiting the dentist. If this describes you—or if you simply have a lot of dental work you need done at one time—you may want to learn more about sedation dentistry or “sleep dentistry” which is performed under general anesthesia.  Depending on your specific concerns and needs, Voyageur Dental may recommend an oral sedative, or IV (intravenous) sedation, both of which are safe and effective.

Oral Conscious Sedation

For dentistry performed under oral sedation, Voyageur Dental will prescribe an oral sedative for you to take prior to your appointment, so you’ll be feeling relaxed by the time you sit down in the exam room.  We may also provide you with laughing gas—or nitrous oxide—during your appointment as a way to enhance the calming effects of the oral sedative. As with any time you are in our office, we’ll ensure that you’re feeling comfortable the entire time, and will monitor your vital signs so we can make adjustments as necessary.

IV Conscious Sedation

For dentistry performed under intravenous or IV conscious sedation, Voyageur Dental will administer a powerful sedative via an IV, meaning you’ll feel completely calm and relaxed during the procedure—and often times will not be able to remember anything about the procedure after it’s done.  You’ll be in a “twilight” state where you’re able to respond to requests and answer questions—for example, you’ll be able to move your head to the left if the dentist needs you to, or will be able to verbally confirm that you’re not feeling any pain—but will be completely relaxed.  Should you elect to receive IV conscious sedation, you’ll want to make plans to have a friend or family member drive you home, and you’ll want to hold off on activities until the next day when the anesthesia is completely out of your system.
